Stature was designed and manufactured for the 'Materials Technology Design' module at the University of Limerick. While an individual project, I collaborated closely with university lab technicians and industry experts to refine the material selection and joinery logic.
The Brief
The task involved designing and manufacturing a chair specifically tailored for recreational reading.
The project was heavily critiqued under a number of strict headings, including creativity, research depth, and evidence of design evolution. Ultimately, the piece was required to demonstrate elegance, comfort, beauty, simplicity, and confidence.
Simplicity and elegance
The design of the chair emerged from a desire to create a profoundly simple piece. Initially, the fundamental surfaces (the seat and the backrest) were mapped out.
These surfaces were then bridged using a minimal number of connecting pieces, paying close attention to ground support and visual weight. The final result assumes a continuous, spiral-like form.
Award-winning & Exhibited
Upon completion of the project, Stature was immediately selected for inclusion in the University of Limerick's prestigious 'Design@UL' exhibition.
In 2018, the chair's striking silhouette and structural intelligence were recognized internationally when it was awarded the A' Design Award in Furniture, Homeware and Decor Items.
