A chair that captivates and inspires

Stature was designed and manufactured for the third year module ‘Materials Technology Design’ of the bachelor degree in Materials and Architectural Technology at the University of Limerick. This was an individual project, however I sought the advice of university lab technicians and industry experts when considering the material and joinery.

Award Winning Design

In 2018 Stature was awarded the A' Design Award in Furniture, Homeware and Decor Items.     

Brief

The task involved designing and manufacturing a chair for recreational reading. The project was critiqued under a number of headings including creativity of design, evidence of research and evidence of design evolution. The brief required the chair design to demonstrate elegance, comfort, beauty, simplicity and confidence.

Simplicity and elegance  

The design of the chair emerged from a desire to create a simple piece. At first the fundamental seat surfaces (the seat and the backrest) were sketched. The surfaces were then joined using a minimal number of connecting pieces and paying consideration to ground support. The chair assumes a spiral like form.

Upon the completion of this project in 2013, Stature was selected for inclusion in the University of Limerick's design exhibition 'Design@UL'.
